The Intrepid is an aircraft carrier turned museum at Pier 86 on the Hudson, with guided K-12 programs in the mornings. The museum is specific about where buses go, and the driver follows it.
The museum’s group rules put drop-off and pick-up inside the parking lot on the northbound side of 12th Avenue, between 45th and 46th Streets, across from the museum. The city does not allow bus drop-off on the southbound side in front of the pier.
The museum’s group page offers free bus parking in that lot for groups of 15 or more, so for most class trips the bus parks there and waits.
Guided K-12 programs start at 10:30 and 11:45 in the morning. School groups need at least ten students, one chaperone for every ten, and two weeks’ notice.
Car GPS sends North Jersey buses down the Henry Hudson Parkway, which the city closes to buses. The bus comes through the Lincoln Tunnel and up 12th Avenue instead.
Spot time is set ahead of departure, and the teacher and the driver have each other’s cell the night before. The arrival is timed to your program or entry time.
About an hour from Bergen County or Newark on a weekday morning, and an hour and a quarter or more from Staten Island or Morris County. The crossing and the congestion toll are itemized at cost.
Round trips are quoted with the wait built in. For groups of 15 or more the bus parks in the museum’s lot across the avenue; otherwise it waits at the city’s bus layover curbs on the side streets nearby.
The return is timed to the bell, and the teacher gets a heads-up when the bus is ten minutes out.
The trip date, students and chaperones, the school address, and the time on your confirmation if you have it.
Gratuity and fuel are in the number and tolls are itemized at cost: one price a business office or PTA can approve.
Driver info the day before, one contact the morning of, and the bus at the school before the bell.
A class of 25 with its chaperones rides a mini coach. Two classes with chaperones, up to 55, fill a full coach.
The whole grade? Several buses leave the school together and arrive together, coordinated as one trip.
“Top notch service, we will definitely be riding with Glyde again.”
The date, the headcount and the school address are enough to price the day.
