Washington, for a bus

What we plan around

Washington has the strictest bus rules of any trip we run, and they shape the day: where a coach may load, where it may wait, and how long it may idle.

01

Signed bus zones only

In Washington buses load and unload only at signed bus zones, such as those on Jefferson and Madison Drives along the Mall, so the day’s stops are planned zone to zone, not door to door.

02

The Capitol’s own curb

At the Capitol, groups unload on the east curb of Garfield Circle or Peace Circle, and buses may not stand, idle or park there. The coach drops, moves on, and comes back at the set time.

03

A legal place to wait

The Union Station garage has a bus deck, the only legal charter stop at the station, with first-come spaces and reserved ones in the spring. Idling is limited to three minutes, so the coach parks, shuts down and waits.

04

Two or three days

At about four and a half hours each way, a same-day trip leaves only a few hours in the city once the driver’s federal hour limits are counted, so most school trips run two or three days, with the coach and driver staying with the group.

How a DC trip runs

Day one to home
Day oneEarly

Out before sunrise

The coach is at the school early, the trip leader and the driver have each other’s cell the night before, and the first stop is timed to the first timed entry.

The driveI-95

About four and a half hours

Down the New Jersey Turnpike and over the Delaware Memorial Bridge, about four and a half hours from North Jersey, Staten Island or Midtown with a rest stop. Tolls are itemized at cost.

In the cityZone to zone

The coach works the bus zones

Each day’s sites are strung together by the signed bus zones, the Capitol’s own curb and the bus deck at Union Station, and the coach is at the zone for every pickup.

HomeLast day

Back at school on time

The ride home leaves on the schedule the school sets, and the trip leader gets a heads-up when the bus is ten minutes out.

A multi-day trip is quoted as one number for the coach and driver for every day, so the school approves one price.

Three steps to a confirmed schedule

How it works
01

Send the date and the headcount

The trip date, students and chaperones, the school address, and the time on your confirmation if you have it.

02

One all-in number the same day

Gratuity and fuel are in the number and tolls are itemized at cost: one price a business office or PTA can approve.

03

Booked and run

Driver info the day before, one contact the morning of, and the bus at the school before the bell.

Sized for the trip

13 to 55-plus

A club of 25 with its chaperones rides a mini coach. An eighth grade of 50 with chaperones fills a 55-seat coach, and a bigger grade runs two.

Questions, answered

Washington class trip FAQ
Where do buses drop off in Washington, DC?
Only at signed bus zones, such as those on Jefferson and Madison Drives along the Mall. At the Capitol, groups unload on the east curb of Garfield Circle or Peace Circle, and buses may not stand or park there.
Can we do Washington as a day trip?
It can be done, but it is a long day: about four and a half hours each way, and federal limits on a driver’s hours leave only a few hours in the city. Most school groups run two or three days, with the coach staying.
Where does the bus wait in Washington?
At legal bus parking, such as the bus deck in the Union Station garage, and never idling at a curb; the city limits idling to three minutes.
What should we book first?
The timed entries. The museums with timed passes book about two months ahead, and some sites further out; the Holocaust Museum’s permanent exhibition is closed from January 2027 into 2029. The bus goes on once the itinerary is set.
Does the coach stay with the group?
Yes. For a multi-day trip the coach and driver stay with the group every day, and the quote covers the whole trip as one number.
Can you provide a certificate of insurance?
Yes, on request, naming your school or organization as additional insured where required.
Who operates the bus?
A licensed motor carrier from our network, under its own authority and $5M liability insurance. Glyde arranges and coordinates the trip, and the operating carrier is named on your contract. You deal with one contact and one number throughout, and the driver’s cell reaches you the night before.
