The museum, for a bus

What we plan around

The Intrepid is an aircraft carrier turned museum at Pier 86 on the Hudson, with guided K-12 programs in the mornings. The museum is specific about where buses go, and the driver follows it.

01

Drop in the lot across 12th Avenue

The museum’s group rules put drop-off and pick-up inside the parking lot on the northbound side of 12th Avenue, between 45th and 46th Streets, across from the museum. The city does not allow bus drop-off on the southbound side in front of the pier.

02

Bus parking for groups

The museum’s group page offers free bus parking in that lot for groups of 15 or more, so for most class trips the bus parks there and waits.

03

Programs at 10:30 and 11:45

Guided K-12 programs start at 10:30 and 11:45 in the morning. School groups need at least ten students, one chaperone for every ten, and two weeks’ notice.

04

Not the parkway

Car GPS sends North Jersey buses down the Henry Hudson Parkway, which the city closes to buses. The bus comes through the Lincoln Tunnel and up 12th Avenue instead.

How an Intrepid day runs

School to school
DepartureMorning

The bus is at the school before the bell

Spot time is set ahead of departure, and the teacher and the driver have each other’s cell the night before. The arrival is timed to your program or entry time.

The driveLincoln Tunnel

Through the tunnel, up 12th Avenue

About an hour from Bergen County or Newark on a weekday morning, and an hour and a quarter or more from Staten Island or Morris County. The crossing and the congestion toll are itemized at cost.

At the museumThe wait

The bus waits nearby

Round trips are quoted with the wait built in. For groups of 15 or more the bus parks in the museum’s lot across the avenue; otherwise it waits at the city’s bus layover curbs on the side streets nearby.

ReturnBefore dismissal

Back at school on time

The return is timed to the bell, and the teacher gets a heads-up when the bus is ten minutes out.

Whole-grade trips run as one plan: several buses arrive at the lot together, and the teacher in charge has one contact for all of them.

Three steps to a confirmed schedule

How it works
01

Send the date and the headcount

The trip date, students and chaperones, the school address, and the time on your confirmation if you have it.

02

One all-in number the same day

Gratuity and fuel are in the number and tolls are itemized at cost: one price a business office or PTA can approve.

03

Booked and run

Driver info the day before, one contact the morning of, and the bus at the school before the bell.

Sized for the class

13 to 55-plus

A class of 25 with its chaperones rides a mini coach. Two classes with chaperones, up to 55, fill a full coach.

Questions, answered

Intrepid field trip FAQ
Where do buses drop off at the Intrepid?
Inside the parking lot on the northbound side of 12th Avenue, between 45th and 46th Streets, across from the museum. The city does not allow bus drop-off on the southbound side in front of the museum.
Where does the bus wait?
In the museum’s lot, where the museum offers free bus parking for groups of 15 or more, or at the city’s bus layover curbs on the side streets between 11th and 12th Avenues.
How far ahead should we book?
The museum asks for two weeks’ notice for school groups. Book the bus once the museum confirms your date and program time.
How long is the drive?
About an hour from Bergen County or Newark on a weekday morning through the Lincoln Tunnel, and an hour and a quarter or more from Staten Island or Morris County.
Does the bus wait during the visit?
Yes. Round trips are quoted with the wait built in, so the bus is back at the lot when the class comes off the ship.
Can you provide a certificate of insurance?
Yes, on request, naming your school or organization as additional insured where required.
Who operates the bus?
A licensed motor carrier from our network, under its own authority and $5M liability insurance. Glyde arranges and coordinates the trip, and the operating carrier is named on your contract. You deal with one contact and one number throughout, and the driver’s cell reaches you the night before.
