The museum, for a bus

What we plan around

The museum covers four city blocks on Central Park West, with more than 40 permanent halls, the Rose Center for Earth and Space and the Gilder Center. Its field-trip rules for buses are short and strict, and the driver works to them.

01

In by the 81st Street driveway

Charter and yellow school buses must use the 81st Street driveway and follow the museum’s transportation specialist on arrival. The museum gives buses a GPS address, 56 West 81st Street, and no one loads or unloads unless directed.

02

The museum sets the times

On arrival the museum logs the group in, gives the bus a departure time and assigns it a place to park. Buses may not lay over on 81st Street, and drivers stay with their vehicles.

03

Coaches at the Rose Center

In the museum’s own field-trip video, coach buses usually drop groups in front of the Rose Center entrance and school buses drop in the garage. One teacher gets a slip from the bus greeter that says where to meet the bus at the end.

04

Booked by phone, five weeks out

School and camp field trips are booked by phone at least five weeks ahead, with one adult chaperone for every ten students. NYC school and camp groups get free general admission on weekdays.

How a museum day runs

School to school
DepartureMorning

The bus is at the school before the bell

Spot time is set ahead of departure, and the teacher and the driver have each other’s cell the night before. The museum opens at 10 and check-in can take up to half an hour, so the arrival is timed to your entry.

The driveInto Manhattan

Routes a bus can use

From New Jersey the bus comes over the George Washington Bridge or through the Lincoln Tunnel and up the West Side to 81st Street; the parkway that car GPS uses is closed to buses. The crossing, and the congestion toll on a Lincoln Tunnel route, are itemized at cost.

At the museumThe wait

The bus waits where the museum puts it

Buses cannot lay over on 81st Street, so the bus waits where the museum assigns it and comes back at the departure time. Round trips are quoted with the wait built in.

ReturnOn the slip

Back at the driveway on time

The teacher’s slip from the bus greeter says where to meet the bus. It is there at the departure time, and the ride home is timed to the bell.

Whole-grade trips run as one plan: several buses arrive together at the 81st Street driveway, and the teacher in charge has one contact for all of them.

Three steps to a confirmed schedule

How it works
01

Send the date and the headcount

The trip date, students and chaperones, the school address, and the time on your confirmation if you have it.

03

Booked and run

Driver info the day before, one contact the morning of, and the bus at the school before the bell.

Questions, answered

Museum field trip FAQ
Where do buses drop off at the Natural History Museum?
At the 81st Street driveway. The museum requires charter and school buses to use it and to follow its transportation specialist; in the museum’s own video, coach buses usually drop in front of the Rose Center entrance and school buses in the garage.
Can the bus wait on 81st Street?
No. The museum does not allow buses to lay over on 81st Street. The museum gives the bus a departure time and a place to wait, the driver stays with it, and it comes back at the departure time.
How far ahead should we book?
The museum asks for at least five weeks to book a school or camp field trip, by phone. Book the bus when the museum confirms your date and time.
Does the bus wait during the visit?
Yes. Round trips are quoted with the wait built in, so the bus is back at the driveway at your departure time.
Do you take groups from New Jersey?
Yes. North Jersey schools come over the George Washington Bridge or through the Lincoln Tunnel, and the crossing and any congestion toll are itemized at cost on the quote.
Can you provide a certificate of insurance?
Yes, on request, naming your school or organization as additional insured where required.
Who operates the bus?
A licensed motor carrier from our network, under its own authority and $5M liability insurance. Glyde arranges and coordinates the trip, and the operating carrier is named on your contract. You deal with one contact and one number throughout, and the driver’s cell reaches you the night before.
